WHEN TO GO

The best time to visit Montepulciano is in the summer, to enjoy the countryside at its peak, the baths and the liveliness of the village. The last Sunday of August there is the most important summer festival, the barrel race through the, a historic race between athletes who challenge each other to push a barrel of 80 kg. In the fall there are different parties and festivals like the Palio of carts and Watermelon Fair (September), the Pumpkin Festival (October), the Street Food Festival (November).

WHY MONTEPULCIANO

Picturesque medieval village, between Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana. The landscapes represent perfectly the idea of Chianti, between green hills and farmland. Montepulciano is the most famous spa town in the province of Siena, has a rich artistic heritage and is famous for its wine. Here they were shot several films like “The English Patient”, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, “Twilight.”

GETTING AROUND

The old town is pedestrianized and you can park near the mura.Le streets are quite steep. Out of the center you can use car, bus or bicycle.

WHAT TO SEE

Within the walls of the old town is the most interesting part of Montepulciano. From the walls to the historic center along the elegant Renaissance palaces along the course and to the main square, Piazza Grande, located at the highest point of the town is dominated by the Town Hall tower with Michelozzo façade (late fourteenth century). In front you can see the Duomo, the XVI century.
Also to see Palazzo Bucelli (with Etruscan and Latin inscriptions), the Church of St. Agnes patron of the city, the house of the poet Poliziano and other impressive buildings such as Contucci, Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo Cervini, Grugni, Ricci. Also interesting are the religious architecture.

WHAT TO DO

Montepulciano is famous for its wine, absolutely to be tasted at the local wine with their underground facilities carved into the tufa. Here also are the spa where you can devote to the welfare, the Civic Museum and the Art Gallery Crucial rich in Etruscan and paintings of the Sienese school.
At the Cantiere Internazionale dell’Arte hosts concerts and cultural evenings.
